Taxes on Pod1um: What coaches need to know

Whether you're coaching locally or serving athletes worldwide, understanding how taxes work is important. This guide explains what Pod1um handles for you and what you're responsible for as a coach or content creator on the platform.

What Pod1um handles

1. VAT for EU customers

Under the EU VAT e-commerce package (effective from July 1, 2021), marketplaces facilitating sales of digital services (like online coaching plans or content) are often deemed the “supplier of record” for VAT purposes. This means:

If an athlete is located in the EU and purchases your digital content or services:

  • Pod1um automatically calculates, collects, and remits VAT based on the athlete’s country.

  • This VAT is deducted before your net revenue is calculated.

  • You don’t need to register for VAT or file VAT returns for Pod1um sales.

2. Sales tax for U.S. customers
In the United States, sales tax for digital products and services varies by state. Where required:

  • Pod1um collects and pays sales tax on applicable transactions with U.S.-based athletes.

  • You don’t need to worry about sales tax registration or compliance in the U.S.

3. Platform-wide compliance
Pod1um works with global payment providers (Stripe and PayPal) and complies with tax laws related to marketplace operations, including digital tax rules and thresholds.

What you’re responsible for

1. Income Tax
As a coach, you're considered an independent professional (contractor/self-employed). This means:

  • You must report your Pod1um earnings to your local tax authority.

  • You’re responsible for filing and paying income tax in your home country.

Pod1um does not withhold income tax on your behalf.

2. Tax forms
Depending on your country, Pod1um may ask for tax information for compliance purposes:

  • U.S. persons: W-9 form

  • Non-U.S. persons: W-8BEN or other applicable form
These forms help determine if withholding tax applies and allow us to provide income summaries where required.
